A new “musical concept” featuring actors Michael Shannon, David Krumholtz, and Kevin Corrigan staged their debut performance Thursday at a New York club.
The band — dubbed Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, and not the more apropos Character Actors — was rounded out by Jon Wurster, a veteran of bands like Superchunk, the Mountain Goats, and Bob Mould’s.
As Wurster promised in his Instagram post announcing the act — and as evidenced by social media video of the show — Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon brought “improvised #rocknrollweirdness” to New York’s tiny Berlin Under A for their first gig, with Shannon, Corrigan and Wurster providing the beats that Krumholtz freestyle rapped over.

Hailing from Cork, Ireland, five-piece Cardinals mix post-punky rock with traditional celtic music and lots of attitude. The band released their debut EP earlier this year on So Young Records (listen below), have been namechecked by Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chattten and Kneecap, and their fall tour schedule incudes Pitchfork Paris and UK dates with Been Stellar. Cardinals will be coming to NYC in December for their first shows here, playing Union Pool on 12/5 and Berlin Under A on 12/6.
